Quick answer: The Abyss Warlock (a.k.a. Magic Warlock) maxes Miasma Chain, Abyss and Miasma Bolt — three magic-damage skills that feed each other +10% magic damage and +20% damage-over-time per level. Aim for the 125% FCR breakpoint (75% while starting out), Consume a summoned Defiler for the magic damage and resistance-shred buff, and keep one demon Bound as a tank. Level with Miasma Bolt into Miasma Chain from level 12 — no respec needed until around 40.

Why play a magic Warlock?

Of the Warlock's three trees, the Arts of Chaos line gives you something no other D2R class has: a magic-damage damage-over-time caster. Magic immunity is rare (mostly Act 5), so the build almost never hits a wall it cannot break — and when it does, the Black Cleft sunder charm plus Consume's resistance shred handle it.

If you want the melee-leaning sibling that shares this tree, see our Warlock builds overview; this page is the pure magic setup.

Core skills and how they work

The whole build lives inside one synergy triangle. Each of these three skills grants the others +10% magic damage and +20% DoT per level:

The fourth piece is Enhanced Entropy (level 24 passive): each level adds +2 yards to miasma radius, +0.2 seconds of duration and +0.2 yards to Abyss radius. Keep it to one hard point and let +skills gear do the rest. The buff side comes from the Demonic Binding tree: Consume a summoned Defiler for a temporary +magic damage and -enemy magic resistance spike, which is why endgame setups stack +magic skill damage — at high skill levels it outperforms both -resistance and raw +skills, point for point.

Skill points and stats

Maxing order for the standard setup (Maxroll's Standard variant):

  1. Abyss 20Miasma Chain 20Miasma Bolt 20 — the synergy triangle first, in that order.
  2. Demonic Mastery 10 (hard points), then Summon Defiler until the damage-shared-with-demon value reaches about 57%, then Blood Oath.
  3. One hard point each in Enhanced Entropy (soft points carry it to about +4 yards), Sigil: Death (soft points carry the radius to 8 yards — a fire-damage panic button for magic-immune packs), Hex: Siphon and Consume.

Stats are simple: enough Strength for your gear (the standard endgame setup lands at 173), everything else into Vitality (around 560 at a geared 99), nothing into Energy. See the Warlock skill tree page for the full prerequisite chains before you plan respecs.

FCR breakpoints: 75 to start, 125 to finish

The Warlock casts on the same frames as the Necromancer. The FCR breakpoints that matter:

Gear guide

Starter (Normal through Nightmare)

The classic caster ladder: Stealth armor at 17, a Lore helm, an Ancients' Pledge shield, then Spirit and an Insight Act 2 mercenary for mana. Shop Ormus in the low 20s for a staff with Teleport charges to bridge mobility before Enigma.

Endgame

The Miasma Chain proc items

Authority and Entropy Locket both proc extra Miasma Chains on striking — and yes, that means actually hitting monsters with your weapon. A community trick that grew out of this: keep a fast-swinging weapon in hand (some players even swap to a bow) so the procs keep rolling alongside your manually cast chains, raising the number of active tethers on screen. It is a real damage gain in dense Terror Zones, at the cost of even more APM — skip it if you are already busy enough.

Bind Demon: what to catch and why

You still want exactly one demon bound, even on a caster. The mechanics that matter:

In this build the demon's job is to body-block and to cover the rare magic-immune pack while your real buff comes from Consuming a second, summoned Defiler. Our builds overview has a dedicated section on hunting a Stone Skin Blunderbore if you want a premium catch.

Leveling route: Abyss from level 1

Maxroll's current recommendation is to level on this build's own skills instead of the old Fire route (if you prefer Fire, our Warlock leveling build covers it):

  1. 1-11: Miasma Bolt everything. It is slow but safe — kite and let the DoT work.
  2. 12-23: Miasma Chain comes online and immediately takes over. Cast chains on both sides of a pack, then walk or Teleport through it to drag the tethers across everything. Points go into Chain.
  3. 24: Enhanced Entropy unlocks — one point, instantly noticeable radius.
  4. Gear milestones: Stealth at 17, Lore helm and Ancients' Pledge shield through Nightmare, shop Ormus for a Teleport-charges staff around 20-23.
  5. Around 40 (after Normal/nightmare transition): do your one Akara respec into the finished framework, with Abyss now maxing first. Keep Sigil: Death in a pocket for the magic-immune packs in Baal's throne room — it is your fire-damage backup.

Gameplay and where to farm

The standard rotation: Abyss to group a pack → chains down and dragged through → Miasma Bolt stragglers and bosses, with an Abyss woven in every couple of seconds on single targets. Buff first — always enter a zone with Consume active and your demon bound.
