Quick answer: MF only affects one step of a drop — the item quality roll (unique/set/rare/magic), checked in that order from rarest to most common. It does not change which item types drop. Monsters killed by your mercenary use your MF plus your mercenary's MF; monsters you kill yourself use only your own.

What is Magic Find (MF)?

Magic Find is an item property — written on gear as "+xx% Better Chance to Find Magic Items" — that raises the chance of a drop being of a higher quality tier. Despite the name, it does not only help magic (blue) items: it improves the odds for unique, set and rare items too, which is why stacking MF is the foundation of almost every farming setup in the game.

MF is a stat carried by whoever lands the kill. That single fact drives most of the practical rules below, from mercenary gearing to who should deliver the final blow on a boss.

How MF works: the item drop rolls

When the game generates an item, it goes through the following sequence of checks. These are classic Diablo II mechanics that Diablo II: Resurrected inherits unchanged:

a. Item type determination

When a monster is killed or a chest is opened, what the game chooses to drop depends on two factors: the number of players in the game, and the particular monster killed or chest opened. Who lands the kill only matters for MF — it has no influence at all on which item types can drop.

Drop odds come from the monster's (or chest's) Treasure Class — a complex recursive table in which higher-level monsters' drop lists contain the lists of lower-level ones, while also rolling higher-level items more often.

b. Item quality determination

The game checks the least likely quality first, working down toward the most likely. The quality check order is:

  1. Unique
  2. Set
  3. Rare
  4. Magic
  5. Superior normal
  6. Normal

Once each quality's chance has been adjusted by the killer's MF value, the game makes a single random roll that settles the final quality of the drop. If the roll lands on unique or set but the monster's drop list does not actually contain that unique or set item, the game drops a rare item with an increased maximum durability instead — the famous "failed unique".

Mercenary note: for monsters killed by your mercenary, MF is calculated as your own MF plus your mercenary's MF. For monsters you kill yourself, your mercenary's MF is not counted.

c. Affix generation

Once the base item and its quality are set, the specific affixes (magical prefixes and suffixes) and their numeric values are rolled — a separate system of its own, covered by the magic prefix & suffix entry.

MF breakpoints and diminishing returns

The influence of MF on item quality is not a smooth curve — it is an irregular curve with breakpoints, MF values beyond which stacking more stops paying off for a given drop. Community testing by FZ produced these conclusions:

  1. Against any monster, the higher your MF, the greater the chance of a unique ring.
  2. When bug-killing Diablo (bug KD), higher MF makes rare rings less likely — and the effect is very noticeable.
  3. For the champion and unique monsters, their minions and the normal monsters of the Chaos Sanctuary, 175 MF maximizes the chance of rare rings; below 175 MF, every additional point helps noticeably.
  4. When bug-killing Diablo, higher MF makes a rare Grim Shield less likely, again quite noticeably — the yield is maximal at 0 MF.
  5. For Chaos Sanctuary monsters, 373 MF is the breakpoint for a rare Grim Shield; below 373 MF, adding MF helps noticeably.
  6. Other rare items behave broadly like the Grim Shield, differing only in where the breakpoint sits: the higher the item's qlvl, the higher the breakpoint MF; the lower the qlvl, the lower the breakpoint.

Putting it together: when clearing the Chaos Sanctuary you are better off raising MF. Taken as a whole, 175 MF is a good all-round choice — it maximizes the chance of rare rings, more than doubles the drop odds of the Grim Shield and other rare items, and puts relatively little pressure on your gear. A common two-character setup is one character at 0 MF bug-killing Diablo, and a second character at 175 MF clearing the zone.

ZLP's testing adds the sobering context for unique hunting: MF does raise the unique rate, but even after the increase the rate stays small, so a huge number of MF runs as the base is indispensable. Taking the Diadem as the example — as MF varies from 1000 down to 0:

Bug MF: the act boss quest-drop bug

"Bug MF" means keeping a boss's first-kill (quest) drop table permanently active — quest drops contain no junk items, so the effective odds of good loot go up. The per-act setup is:

A5 Baal is the complicated one — beginners only need to follow these steps:

  1. Every time your Baal-killer enters a game, press Q and check the last quest. The quest prompt must read along the lines of "another player has already completed this quest; you cannot complete it" (the exact wording may differ slightly — what matters is that you cannot complete it). If that is not what it says, leave the game immediately.
  2. To guarantee that prompt every single time, you must always dual-box: first create the game with a character that has already completed the Baal quest, then bring your MF character into that game to kill Baal. This keeps the "cannot complete" prompt permanently active.

What "MFing" means in practice

"MFing" is the player behavior built around this system: stacking as much MF on your gear as practical, then killing the same monster — or the same area's monsters — over and over in pursuit of rare drops. Because MF only tweaks the quality roll, the whole discipline is about maximizing the number of quality rolls you get per hour, which is why route choice and kill speed matter as much as the raw MF number.

MF gear: kill speed vs MF value

MF gear always involves a trade-off between the time each kill takes and the MF value you carry. Beyond the MF number itself, a workable setup usually still needs combat stats — skill levels, Faster Cast Rate (FCR), Faster Hit Recovery (FHR) and the like — so that adding MF does not slow your runs down enough to cancel out the benefit.

Chasing the theoretical maximum MF value is its own long-standing player hobby. Because the other gear slots are shared across classes, the pre-1.10 record belonged to the Barbarian, whose ability to dual-wield melee weapons gave him one more weapon slot's worth of MF than anyone else.
